1. Baby Tim

Earlier this fall, Mr. Curcio’s Advanced English II students entered the New York Times’ 100-word personal narrative contest where 13 winners are chosen and published in the actual world-renowned New York Times. Out of thousands of entries, sophomore Timothy Miller was chosen as a winner. Here is his story:

“Baby Tim” by Timothy Miller

6 p.m.: The words “I dare you” were muttered at an empty park. 6:05 p.m.: I slid my legs into a baby swing. 6:15 p.m.: My friends and I laughed hysterically as my legs dangled. 6:30 p.m.: I was stuck. 7 p.m.: No one called for a parent in fear of stark punishment. 7:30 p.m.: My legs became red and numb, but we finally called a parent. 8 p.m.: The fire truck arrived with baby oil and bolt cutters. 8:15 p.m.: Freedom. Four years later: My friends still call me “Baby Tim.”

2. In Sports… 

  • The Derry Area Lady Trojans defeated Geibel Catholic 53-30 in a home non-section contest. Derry’s Rachelle Marinchek led all scorers with 20 points and Jane Huss added 11.
  • Boys basketball split the weekend (1-1), defeating Connsellsville, 59-31, and coming up short against Southmoreland, 83-80.
  • The Derry Area Jr High Wrestling Team won the River Valley Babbit Duals Tournament this past weekend with record of 5-0 to up their season record to 6-0.
  • The Derry Area Varsity wrestling competed in the Babbit Duals this past weekend accumulating a record of 3-2. Derry suffered a defeat to Glendale 36-31 and to eventual champions Penns Valley 54-14. The did score wins against Bellwood-Antis 54-6, Meyersdale 45-30 and host team River Valley 36-41. Going 5-0 on the day was Anthony Mucci, Brett Klim and Giovanni Beatrice.

3. Candy Cane Grams

Class Officers will be selling Candy Cane Grams during homeroom period. Buy your friends and teachers Candy Canes to spread some holiday cheer. Each Candy Cane costs 50 cents. All Candy Cane Grams will be delivered by a surprise guest on Monday, December 19.
