Pumpkin Harvest

Pumpkin+Harvest

On June 22, 2022, the Derry FFA planted pumpkins at the field by Grandview Elementary school using our tractor that was donated by the FFA Alumni.

The pumpkins did well and we had two crops one that were already ripe and the other that was not ripe just yet. We then harvested the pumpkins that were ripe on September 30th and the others were harvested on October 4th, 2022 which was when we held our 1st-grade activity.

Grandview’s first graders were welcomed to the pumpkin patch to pick out some for their classrooms.  We sold pumpkins on Friday, October 7th after the Homecoming parade until the kickoff of the football game which was anywhere from $2 to $7.50 depending on the size of the pumpkin. We were also able to use some of the remaining pumpkins for our getting acquainted event which was held after school on October 12th from 3 to 4:30 pm. Members carved the pumpkins of their choice and were able to take them home.

The Trojan Florist was also able to create fresh arrangements with the pumpkins. Overall, I would say that our pumpkins were fairly successful but we could still improve on ways to sell them for example, maybe put on the announcements that the Derry FFA has pumpkins for sale at the Ag/Hort complex for $2 to $7.50. Also, the Grandview activity went well and the 1st Graders enjoyed being able to go to the field and pick out their own pumpkins to take home.

Throughout the whole process from planting to harvesting, there were many members involved including the officers.
