3 things to know for May 3: Baseball Explodes, Track Playoffs, Volleyball

1. Baseball Wins Big

In a game that was well pitched and defended, the Derry Area Trojan baseball team pounded out eleven hits in a 10-1 road win against East Allegheny Monday afternoon. The Wildcats were looking to clinch the section crown; however the Trojans were able to score early against EA ace Nate Holmes, who came into the contest with a 6-0 record and a stellar 0.97 ERA which included 61 strikeouts. Brady Angus, Ryan Hood, Nick Thomas and Johnathan Hugus each had two hits and Noah Cymmerman drove in three runs.

DA is now (8-3) overall and (5-2) in section play while EA drops to (9-3) (7-2).

Game two of the series will be played this afternoon at Grandview Field beginning at 4:00 PM.

2. Tango in Shenango

The Derry Area girls’ track and field team head to Shenango today to face the home team, Shenango, and two other teams, Shady Side Academy and Hopewell, in a triple-dual dual meet in the semi-final round of the WPIAL playoffs.

All teams had to finish as the top two teams in their respective sections to get to this matchup. Derry Area, was the section champion of 7-AA, their 4th title in five years (2020 excluded). Shenango is the section-winning representative of 1-AA.

Meet time is 3:00 PM.

3. Volleyball Wins

In volleyball Derry beat Mars 3-1.  Scores were 9-25, 25-15, 25-22 and 25-21. Nick Allison led Derry with 12 kills. Gabe Carbonara and Noah Berkhimer each added 6 kills.  Matt Rhoades had 28 assists and 6 digs.

Derry JV won 2-0. Scores were 25-14 and 25-20.  Cam McNichol had 9 kills.  Johnathan Shumaker had 14 assists and Bryce McNichol added 7 digs.
