If you were to ask anyone, “What’s the most recognizable piece of media ever?” they’d probably list numerous superheroes and a few nostalgic cartoons. Amongst them, without a doubt, they’d mention Garfield. This orange, lasagna-loving cat made his first comic debut on June 19th, 1978, becoming an unmistakable icon for people of all ages.
However, Garfield has been a somewhat dormant icon lately, with his online media appearances dwindling. That used to be the case until a new Garfield movie trailer was recently released to the public. Simply called “The Garfield Movie” or “Garfield Movie 2024” by the public, it marks the third theatrical release in the Garfield series, though it doesn’t seem to follow the story of the previous films.
Now, the online community is actually quite in favor of this movie’s story and characters. People seem genuinely interested and excited to see what this movie brings to the table in 2024, especially since the animation style is reminiscent of The Peanuts or Captain Underpants movies from more recent years (2015 and 2017). The only major complaint across the board is about the casting for the voice of Garfield.
Unfortunately, Garfield will not be reprised by his original voice actor Bill Murray; instead, Chris Pratt will voice him this time. For those who watched the Super Mario movie, you’ll remember the same complaint about Chris Pratt voicing Mario.
What sets this apart, though, is not just that Chris Pratt is the voice of Garfield, but it’s the perceived lack of effort he’s putting into the voice acting. Many people have pointed out his less-than-stellar performance in the recent trailer, leading to a plethora of memes like “Wow, Garfield does a really good Chris Pratt impression.” Some have even recorded themselves reading his lines in the trailer to highlight his lack of effort.
This raises the question: What beloved character will Chris Pratt voice next? I guess only time will tell…

Pretty good read for an article that is not too long and goes straight to the point.
Great for fans of one of the most iconic cartoon characters in Garfield that sort of excited to hear about a new “live-action” movie I guess you can say, of Garfield.

Chris Pratt voicing Garfield would make more sense than him voicing Mario.
