Meet Mr. Slebodnik

Meet Mr. Slebodnik

This academic year, Derry Area High School welcomed Mr. Slebodnik as a student teacher in Miss Smolleck’s classroom. Hailing from IUP, this marks his first experience with student teaching.

“What’s intriguing about student teaching is that we don’t have the liberty to handpick our placement,” said Mr. Sledbodnik. “We can certainly express our preferences, but in my case, I left that choice blank, eager to embrace any opportunity to begin my student teaching journey. I was just thrilled to embark on this experience.”

Mr. Slebodnik has quickly found his footing at Derry, and he attributes this to the vibrant tapestry of the school and its students. He’s genuinely fascinated by the diverse stories and experiences that students share.

“My favorite aspect of teaching here is all of you, the students. I relish learning about the games our athletes play, discovering your varied interests, and hearing your experiences. But what truly keeps me smiling are the jokes – oh, the jokes!” laughed Mr. Slebodnik. “I have a profound love for humor, and many of you never fail to make me laugh. I find that amazing.”

Beyond the classroom, Mr. Slebodnik boasts a few intriguing hobbies. He’s a multi-talented individual, being part of a band where he not only strums the guitar but also lends his vocal talents.

“I’ve been playing the guitar for about eight years and singing for a year. Music has always been a significant part of my life,” said Mr. Slebodnik.

In addition to his musical pursuits, he’s embarked on a nostalgic journey by taking up horseback riding, a passion he had as a child.

“Starting horseback riding is a dream come true for me,” said Mr. Slebodnick. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a little kid.”

Mr. Slebodnik’s enthusiasm for teaching and his eagerness to explore new interests outside the classroom are interesting. Derry Area High School is indeed fortunate to have such a dedicated and multi-talented individual as a student teacher this school year.

“I’ve developed a newfound affection for the history of this town and the surrounding area,” said Mr. Slebodnik.

“Derry is relatively new to me, but thus far, I’ve truly relished my time here.”
