Señora Schweinberg’s 3rd annual salsa competition took place in her room on Friday, September 8th. Spanish students formed groups and prepared salsas in the kitchen for their fellow students and teachers to sample.
Señora talked about how excited the students were to have the opportunity to create something delicious. There were various types of salsas, including fruit salsa, habanero salsa, and strawberry and corn salsa.
“They were determined to win,” Señora Schweinberg said. “They were highly competitive and genuinely wanted to craft a tasty salsa for people to enjoy.”
The experience was enjoyable for the students because it allowed them to express their creativity through their salsa creations. However, the competition also presented its challenges. Keegan Roddy explained that she and her team faced time constraints when making their salsa.
“The most challenging aspect was probably the time limit,” Keegan Roddy said. “We had a lot of fruit to cut up and mix for the salsa, and we almost ran out of time.”
In total, there were 8 salsas available for tasting, and 150 people participated as taste testers. After trying each salsa, the testers voted on paper, ranking the salsa’s texture, appearance, and taste on a scale of 1 to 3. One salsa was a mystery entry from a non-student, Mrs. Gardener.
“I approached the office to request permission for the salsa competition, and the office staff told me that Mrs. Gardener makes incredible salsa,” Señora said. “Intrigued, I included it as the mystery salsa.”
At the end of the day, the votes were tallied. The winner, with over 1,000 points, was a fruit salsa served with homemade cinnamon tortillas prepared by the Salsa Hermanas (Keegan Roddy, Sonya Metcaff, Madison Weaver, Rachel Lloyd, and Lydia Kiser).
“I believe the chips added a unique touch of creativity to our salsa,” Keegan Roddy remarked. “They complemented the fruit salsa wonderfully.”
