Efforts to enhance care for mothers and babies took center stage today in Dauphin County.
The Regional Maternal Health Coalition grants offer financial assistance to organizations that tackle the needs of maternal health. According to the President of Penn State Health Milton S. Medical Center, these programs are already benefiting vulnerable pregnant women and children.
According to Dr. Debra Bogen, the Secretary of Health at the PA Department of Health, doula care has a significant impact and having these services available in the community can make a real difference. She emphasized that transportation and access to care have been major challenges, and these are the areas where the coalitions will focus their efforts.
The Maternal Mortality Review Committee has recommended certain actions to address the issue of maternal morbidity. In response, the Department of Health has provided funding to four coalitions to carry out this work. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, both the state and the U.S. have higher rates of maternal morbidity compared to other countries.
