Camp in northern Mexico goes up in flames as migrants clash with police during midnight raid
In the early hours of Saturday, migrants attempting to evade arrest resorted to setting fire to blankets and mattresses at a camp in the city of Chihuahua, Mexico. This incident occurred during a government forces raid aimed at clearing the site.
Just before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, enforcement action near the U.S. border took place. President-elect Trump has been critical of Mexico’s government, claiming that they have not done enough to control migration into the U.S.

Around midnight, approximately 250 Mexican officials, including National Guard military police in anti-riot gear, surrounded the encampment, as witnessed by Reuters.
According to a witness, migrants at the site started burning mattresses and blankets in protest. Additionally, they attempted to leave the area while carrying their babies and personal belongings.
The fire was successfully put out in less than an hour, and fortunately, no one was hurt or killed.
The migration agency in Mexico has not yet provided a response to the request for comment.
According to a migration official, who spoke to Reuters on the condition of anonymity, the objective of the operation was to transport the migrants to Mexico’s southern border. Once there, they would be instructed to return to their respective home countries.

The number of people who were detained remains unclear.
Many of the 150 migrants were Venezuelan families who had made a stop at the camp in Chihuahua city. The camp is located about 220 miles (360 km) from the border city of Ciudad Juarez, which is across from El Paso, Texas. These families were on their way to the U.S.
Daniel Barrios, a Venezuelan migrant, was surprised by the unexpected arrival of the police while he was traveling with a woman carrying a baby on her back and a child with a sparkly blue backpack.
“They encircled the camp and requested to engage in a conversation. They explained that they intended to conduct an inspection and similar activities,” he conveyed.
“Is it really logical to bring an entire police and military force just for the purpose of conducting an inspection at a camp, especially when they could easily do it during daylight?”
“We have to move,” Barrios said abruptly when he noticed officials approaching.
Confusion and fear filled the hearts of another family that sought refuge from the camp. A woman, overwhelmed with emotions, sobbed while tightly holding onto two children. Two men, carrying toddlers in their arms, stood close by, as a plume of red smoke billowed behind them.
“The police and migration officials arrived at the shelter today, leaving the men feeling disoriented and scared,” one of the men expressed.
