1. WCCA Results

Derry Area was well-represented at the 2022 Westmoreland County Coaches Association Championships Saturday at Latrobe.

On the boys’ side, Ahmad Ward finished 8th overall in the 100 meter, Logan Corbett demolished his personal best in the mile with a fine time of 5 minutes and 20 seconds, Tim Miller ran a 48 second 300 hurdle time, Dom Patrick broke the 100 feet mark in discus, and senior Derrick Moffett officially joined the 400 club by hitting a new personal record in the 400 meter with a time of 55 seconds.

On the girls’ side, Sydney Williams ran a one minute and five second 400, Charity Peterman and Shyanne Hornbaker both did well in the 300 hurdles, Ashley Baker finished 8th overall in the triple jump, and Sara Bungard placed 6th in the shot put with a throw of 32 feet 10 inches.

The story of the day belonged to three freshmen, Julia Omlor, Jane Huss, and Sophia Mazzoni. Omlor and Huss both went 3 for 3 in their events as Omlor placed 4th overall in the 100 meter, 5th in the 200 meter, and was a member of the 4 by 100 team with Cassie Byers, Hornbaker, and Reigna Taylor, who all made the podium in 5th place. Huss took 2nd place in the 2 mile and was a member of both the 4 by 800, with Williams, Alayna Williams, and Emma Huber, and 4 by 400 team, with Williams, Williams, and Peterman, who all made the podium.

Sophia Mazzoni placed 3rd place overall in the javelin amongst a stacked group of upperclassmen with a new personal best throw of 110 feet, 11 inches. With this new mark, that places Sophia in the top 5 in the WPIAL in the event.

Next up… the boys and girls will head to Altoona on Friday for Mount Lion Invitational, and the girls will tango in Shenango tomorrow in the semi-final round of the WPIAL team playoffs. Good luck, ladies!

2. Fun Day

May 5th will be an exciting day for the high school! Josh Horner will be visiting us in the morning to give an inspirational message. The Kona Ice truck will be available to complement your school lunch. We will have various outside activities for you to enjoy the rest of the day. If we have rain, the outdoor activities will be rescheduled for May 13th.

Activities are free but bring your change to spend on optional events like pie in the face contest and other optional purchases!

Starting today you can buy a ticket to win an opportunity to pie your favorite teacher or administrator in the face. The tickets will be sold in E307 Mrs. Prato’s room before the start of 1st period and during homeroom. Each ticket cost 25 cents and can also be purchased during the fair.
