Report suggests India is readying to repatriate 18,000 undocumented Indian immigrants in the United States
India has expressed its willingness to collaborate with President Donald Trump’s administration in repatriating approximately 18,000 of its citizens who are currently residing illegally in the United States.
According to Bloomberg, the Indian government is making preparations to verify individuals and initiate the deportation process. However, officials who are part of the process suggest that the actual number of Indian citizens residing illegally in the United States might be significantly higher.
Countries worldwide are making strategic moves to collaborate with President Trump and prevent themselves from being subjected to tariffs and other potential measures that the U.S. may employ to undermine their trade relationships. India is among these countries taking proactive steps to safeguard its economic interests.
According to a spokesperson from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, there is an ongoing collaboration between India and the US to address the issue of illegal migration. The aim of this joint effort is to establish more opportunities for legal migration from India to the United States.
The Trump administration’s decision could also have implications for its approach to H1-B visas, a highly debated issue that has caused divisions among the president’s most loyal supporters.
In 2023, Indian citizens dominated the H-1B visa program, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the approximately 400,000 individuals who were granted these visas.
